There is growing concern over the calibre and capabilities of the American diplomats who will be charged with negotiating with North Korea when the two nations sit down to discuss the abolition of Pyongyang’s nuclear arsenal and the future of the Korean Peninsula.
President Donald Trump accepted on Friday an invitation from Kim Jong-un, the North Korean dictator, for face-to-face talks by May and there is now movement behind the scenes to decide on the location, the agenda and the personnel who will represent each government.
For Washington, the problem is what one analyst described as a “demoralised diplomatic corps and a pared-down State Department.”
