Eric Bischoff’s 83 Weeks Podcast recently included a discussion about Vince McMahon and the WWE’s Attitude Era. Longtime pro wrestling fans will remember that Bischoff’s company, WCW, was winning The Monday Night War for 83 weeks in the TV ratings until McMahon moved forward with The Attitude Era.

WWE became edgier, grittier and pulled no punches when it came to content. The company went straight for the throat and the new direction ultimately led WWE past WCW. But in the minds of many fans, Vince did nothing but copy Bischoff’s formula and that decision was the difference maker.
Bischoff spoke about that assertion and his answer was perhaps not what the audience expected.
“They recognized that they needed to change the presentation. They adapted a different format. But as is historically been the case for the WWF and Vince McMahon, when he decides he’s going to do something, he does it really big and puts 100% into it.”
But does Eric think WCW could have done things any differently to turn the tide back their favor?
“I don’t think there was anything we could have done. We had played out the nWo, we were kind of–I don’t want to say recycling stories–but we were certainly not at our peak at the time he decided he was going to unleash The Attitude Era, even though he probably didn’t know what The Attitude Era was when he unleashed it. He went full-bore. I don;’t think there was anything we cold have done.”
The Monday Night War ended nearly 20 years ago but it continues to be a source rich with history and groundbreaking moments that fans will surely never forget.
