L’Équipe report this morning that Bruno Génésio is reconsidering his future at Rennes, after guiding the club to a Europa League qualification with an impressive season.
The former Lyon man was named Ligue 1’s manager of the year this season, and has one year left on his current contract. Rennes are looking to extend his contract, with his close relationship with director of sport Florian Maurice a key factor.
Given his recent comments, Génésio ostensibly wants the squad to be improved over the summer and for as few key players as possible to be lost – Nayef Aguerd is being targeted by West Ham, while Martin Terrier and Benjamin Bourigeaud have also attracted interes, the latter being one year from the end of his contract.
This season has vastly improved Génésio’s standing in the world of management and shown that his attractive style of play brings results. The coach is not closing the door to outside interest, with a Saudi club notably submitting a particularly lucrative offer to the Frenchman. He is also on the shortlist for a Champions League club.
Although it’s unlikely that he would make a big-money move to Asia again – he already spent a year in China – the prospect of a contract renewal with Rennes is no longer a certainty, even if it is the likeliest option. That said, should a Champions League offer present itself, he could be waiting to see how the situation develops.
