OMAHA, NE — “Mom, why would moms go naked? Why do they want naked moms?” a young Omaha, Nebraska, boy reportedly asked his mother when he saw a sign at a strip club that offered “extra cash” to stay-at-home moms who are willing to peel off all their clothing.
Here’s the recruiting pitch on the sign at Kandi’s Gentlemen’s Club, located near 72nd and Blondo streets: “Fully nude girls! Stay at home moms earn extra cash! Apply inside!”

After the ensuing kerfuffle that unnerved moms like Jetta Eveland and other neighbors, the sign was taken down. Kandi’s, is smack-dab in the middle of a family-friendly neighborhood that includes Bowling Green Park, businesses like Dairy Queen, and a couple of schools, St. Pius X/St. Leo School and Creighton Prep.
“My son can read that,” Eveland told news station KMTV of the strip club’s sign. “He knows what nude means and it’s just kind of terrible.”
The club seemed to admit on Facebook that “we did it wrong.”
“Now we want to do it right,” the post said. “Kandi’s is looking to hire 25-30 dancers/entertainers. We want only the best. If you believe you are a true professional and can be one of the top dancers and earners in Omaha, then we want you. If you believe you are less than the best, then please pass us by.”
Those who believe they have the skills to work at Kandi’s will have to wait before they start raking in the cash, though. The club, originally billed as Candyland, is currently embroiled in a liquor license dispute after the Omaha City Council voted last year to recommend that the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission deny the permit to serve alcohol because it’s so close ot schools..
That first name caused as much furor as the sign enticing moms to come in and dance for extra spending money.
“I, for one, don’t want to explain to my 6-year-old granddaughter why she can’t go to Candyland by Grandma’s (house),” Teresa Hall wrote in an email to the City Council, the Omaha World Herald reported. “Candyland is her favorite board game.”
Ray Kurtzuba, who owns the building, said at the time the name didn’t refer to the popular children’s game, but was an homage to a friend named Candy who helped him come up with a name for the club. Even with the name change, City Council members weren’t swayed to approve the liquor license.
Hundreds of people sent emails to the City Council members opposing the bar’s liquor license application because of its location. The building at 7215 Blondo St. formerly housed a Japanese restaurant, Mt. Fuji Inn, that closed after 40 years.
“What I would like to see in this iconic restaurant location is something that does a little better job of filling that void with a new business that is more appropriate for this area, more appropriate for this stretch and that fits in better with the other businesses that are being successful there,” Councilman Pete Fetersen said at the time, according to the World Herald report.
Feterson told Yahoo News that the bar now known as Kandi’s is going through the appeal process with Nebraska liquor control authorities to get its license.
“It’s not a good fit for the surrounding neighborhoods and businesses, and the temporary signs are distasteful,” Fetersen told Yahoo. “They have posted a number of different signs outside the establishment and we have had city sign inspectors out several times.”
And although owner Kurtzuba took down the sign recruiting moms, he told USA Today that until he gets his liquor license, more signs neighbors might find objectionable will go up in its place.
Ray Kurtzuba, who owns Kandi’s, told USA TODAY, that the stay-at-home mom sign and other signs the Omaha City Council might find distasteful are going up until they agree to work with him on getting a liquor license.
“My intention is to keep the signs coming and draw attention to them and get the city working with me,” Kurtzuba said. “It’s staying and another one is coming next week. I’m getting the reaction I wanted. I think I’ve been discriminated against.”
The tactic seems to be working, at least on Facebook. Several people noted news coverage surrounding the signs are giving Kurtzuba extra publicity One person called the sign recruiting moms “genius.” Another wrote that he has a t-shirt with the silhouette of a stripper that says “I support single moms.”
