SAN RAMON, CA — A 70-year-old man survived a cardiac arrest Tuesday afternoon thanks to two Bartlett Tree Experts employees and a San Ramon police officer. Bryan Waters and Alberto Ramon-Garcia, who were working on trees in the area, saw the man collapse in his garage and sprung into action.
Police said Corporal Mike Schneider was alerted to the medical emergency after Waters called the San Ramon Valley 911 Communications for help while Ramon-Garcia starting giving the man CPR.
When Schneider arrived, he grabbed his automated external defibrillator and was able to revive the man with the shock. Firefighters eventually took over and transported the man to a nearby hospital. He is expected to recover, according to police.
Police said the tree company regularly trains their employees in CPR and all of the San Ramon patrol vehicles are equipped with AEDs.
A patient’s survival rate increases dramatically when an AED is used properly and CPR is administered quickly, according to the American Heart Association. Cardiac arrest may be brought on due to a heart condition or heart attack.
