Mosley sides with Ecclestone: calls on F1 to scrap season!

Former FIA president Max Mosley says the degree of uncertainty lingering over the 2020 F1 season should incite the sport’s chiefs to abandon this year’s campaign.

So far, nine races have been canceled or postponed amid the global coronavirus crisis, with the French Grand Prix likely next in line to get the axe.

In the face of the current disruption, contingency plans are being devised by Liberty Media and the FIA to ensure F1 can go racing when the coast is clear.

But Mosley insists that “rational plans” cannot be constructed as long as there is no clarity on how long it will take for the pandemic to subside.

The 80-year-old therefore echoed the recommendation of Bernie Ecclestone, his friend and former ally, who called on Liberty to cancel the 2020 season.

“Then the teams and race promoters would have certainty so they could plan and take action,” Mosley told German news agency DPA.

“Waiting risks making things worse with no certainty of gain. There is no guarantee that racing can start again in July, indeed it looks increasingly unlikely.

“Until we know what will happen globally with the pandemic, it is not possible to make rational plans for F1.”

As for running events behind closed doors as F1 motorsport director Ross Brawn has suggested, Mosley insists such a scheme “would be a financial disaster for most race organizers”.

“Act now,” he urged. “And use the opportunity to reorganize and restructure Formula 1 in order to put it on a much more solid financial basis for the future.”
