Brayton Lee dropped his first bout of the 2019 UWW Junior World Championships to Ashraf Ashirov (Azerbaijan) by 3-2 decision and was subsequently eliminated when Ashirov dropped his next match.

Lee would have had a chance to advance via the repechage system if Ashirov had beaten Vasile Diacon (Moldova) and continued to win. Instead, Lee’s Estonian tournament experience is cut short after only one bout.

Lee earned his spot on May 18 when he defeated Ohio State’s Sammy Sasso in two straight matches of a best-of-three series at the Junior World Team Trials. He was joined in Estonia by Gophers head assistant coach Luke Becker.

Lee, coming off his redshirt season, will be an impact wrestler in the middleweights for the Gophers. Last season he went 26-7 with 8 technical falls wrestling unattached at open tournaments.
