Augsburg rallies for win over UW-Stevens Point

MINNEAPOLIS — It came down to the final bout of the evening, and the lone senior on the Augsburg College wrestling team delivered on Senior Night, as Rashad Kennedy (SR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) claimed a technical fall to secure a 26-24, come-from-behind win for the Auggies over the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Friday evening at Si Melby Hall.

Four straight pins opened the match, with the Pointers taking three of them to lead 18-6. But Augsburg won four of the final six bouts, including a forfeit, two technical falls and a major decision, to secure the victory.

Trailing 24-21 going into the final bout, Kennedy improved to 18-4 with his third technical-fall win of the season, a 16-0, third-period triumph over Steve Collins at 149 pounds. Grant Parker (JR, Onalaska, Wis.) opened the match with a 2:24 pin of Jaden Boivin at 157 pounds. The pin was his first of the season and his seventh bonus-point win of the season, as Parker improved to 25-10 overall.

No. 1-ranked and defending heavyweight national champion Donny Longendyke (JR, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) used two takedowns and three four-point near-falls to score a 16-1, third-period technical-fall win over Donny Ralston.

Now 32-2, Longendyke has won 22 straight matches. Of his 32 wins, 24 are bonus-point wins (18 pins, five major decisions, one technical fall). Longendyke is now 76-4 in his Augsburg career and 116-25 in his collegiate career. Of his 116 wins, 87 are bonus-point victories (63 pins, four technical falls, 20 major decisions).

Logan Hortop (JR, Faribault, Minn.) rallied from an 8-3, first-period deficit with three takedowns and two near-falls to score a 19-10, major-decision win over Wyatt Weiler in a wild bout at 197. He also claimed five escapes and built 1:15 riding time to improve to 20-18 on the season.

Both teams had five wins in the match, including a forfeit win for Sam Bennyhoff (FY, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) at 133, improving to 24-5 on the year.

Augsburg now leads the all-time series with the Pointers 21-1, claiming its 19th straight win in the series.
