The B.A.A. 10K’s 6.2-mile course is a scenic
tour through Boston’s Back Bay. Notable neighborhoods and attractions
include the campus of Boston University and Kenmore Square. The race
begins on Charles Street, winds down picturesque Commonwealth
Avenue and Bay State Road as far west as Babcock Street near Boston
University. The course then heads back on Commonwealth Avenue, around
the Public Garden, and finishes on Charles Street.
The B.A.A. 10K has been the site of many fast
races, including two world leading times and an all-comers world best.
In both 2012 and 2014, the fastest 10K times in the world were run at
the B.A.A. 10K, as Kenyans Geoffrey Mutai and Stephen
Sambu clocked winning times of 27:19 and 27:25, respectively. Last
year, Sambu split 8K in 22:02 en route to his victory, a mark that is
recognized as the American All-Comers Road Record for 8 kilometers. The
women’s event record stands at 31:04 set by Mamitu
Daska in 2014.
A prize purse of $48,500 (USD) will be
distributed to the top 10 runners overall, the top three masters
finishers (ages 40 and older), and the top three push rim wheelchair
finishers. Prize money awards are equal for men and women, and
are based on gun time results. The men’s and women’s champions will
each receive $10,000 (USD) in prize money.
At the 2014 B.A.A. 10K, Kenya’s Sambu
successfully defended his title in a time of 27:25, defeating 2011
Boston Marathon® champion Mutai, who finished second in 27:35. Kenya’s
Daniel Salel placed third for the second consecutive year with
a time of 27:41.
In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Mamitu Daska won
her second consecutive B.A.A. 10K crown in 31:04, also a new event
record. Daska is the only woman in race history to have won two B.A.A.
10K titles. Kenyans Betsy Saina and Aliphine Tuliamuk-Bolton
finished second and third in 31:10 and 31:52, respectively, rounding
out the podium.
