ATLANTA, GA — The stars of reality TV show “Chrisley Knows Best,” embroiled in a legal situation with the Georgia Department of Revenue, filed a lawsuit against a tax official Tuesday, reports say.
Todd and Julie Chrisley filed the lawsuit claiming Joshua Waites, director of the revenue department’s special investigations unit, unfairly targeted them in a “bogus” investigation in order to get media fame by taking down television stars, according to a WSB-TV report.
The Chrisleys live in Nashville, Tennessee. Federal prosecutors said in February 2017 Todd Chrisley claimed on a national radio program, “obviously the federal government likes my tax returns because I pay $750,000 to $1 million just about every year so the federal government doesn’t have a problem with my taxes.”
But prosecutors said the couple did not file timely income tax returns for the 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 tax years or pay federal income taxes on time during that period.

Instead, prosecutors said the Chrisleys obstructed IRS collection efforts, including hiding income, lying to third parties about their tax returns and lying to FBI and Internal Revenue Service agents.
The couple paid $150,000 to settle with the Department of Revenue, WSB-TV reported, but they claim to have incurred big legal expenses because of the investigation.

The couple’s daughter, Lindsie Chrisley Campbell, said in August her father and brother Chase are extorting her to support the family’s defense by threatening to release a sex tape of her.
The Georgia Department of Revenue sent Patch the following statement:
Our investigators are fair and impartial in their work with a commitment to ensuring compliance with the law. In accordance with state law and as a matter of standard protocol, the Department cannot comment on the specifics of any investigation, settlement or pending litigation. This development is disappointing and their accusations are unfounded, but we will decline to provide any further comment on this matter.
