One of the biggest stories of the week concerned the contracts that have supposedly just been offered to a few of the members of the NXT UK roster. The talent on the show had previously been allowed to compete for some independent promotions while remaining under contract to WWE. However, it was reported recently that WWE presented new deals to the talent during their NXT UK tapings, and these deals reportedly prohibit the talent from competing for all indie promotions except for the ones that WWE already has a working relationship with. Needless to say, this has drawn some controversy and even a great deal of backlash from quite a few fans of the performers on the WWE Network’s newest weekly series.
According to an update from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the contracts include several other huge details as well. What’s important to note is that there are actually three types of NXT UK contracts right now. Lower level talent are currently signed to a deal that will allow them to take additional bookings just as they have been doing for months. The second deal saw wrestlers receive a one-year contract extension with no raise. Those signed to this contract will still be allowed to accept bookings, but they cannot compete against talent from other major promotions. The last deal is for the top talent in NXT UK at the moment, who have now become exclusive to the brand and have earned a pay raise as well.
Interestingly, NXT UK stars are cannot compete against talent from competitive promotions such as Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling, but Impact Wrestling is said to not be listed as a competitor to WWE anymore. Also, WWE’s agreements with promotions in the UK reportedly include a clause that allows the company to buy out the promotions if they desire to do so. WWE currently has a working relationship with United Kingdom promotions ICW and PROGRESS Wrestling, and the wXw promotion in Germany. Some fans have criticized WWE over fear that the new NXT UK contracts will do harm to the thriving UK independent wrestling circuit. Meanwhile, UK Champion Pete Dunne defended new deals a few days ago.
