Dombrovskis steps in as interim EU trade commissioner

Von der Leyen said it’s now up to the Irish government to present ‘suitable candidates.’

European Commission Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis will take over the trade portfolio temporarily after the resignation of Phil Hogan, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said today.

Von der Leyen said it’s now up to the Irish government to present “suitable candidates.”

“As in the past, I will invite the Irish government to propose both a woman and a man,” she said.

Von der Leyen did not exclude a future reshuffle of Commission portfolios, saying “at a later stage I will decide on the final allocation of portfolios in the Commission.”
