On Wednesday evening, Ernie Els announced his captain picks for the 2019 Presidents Cup – adding Joaquin Niemann, Sungjae Im, Jason Day and Adam Hadwin to his International side.

Both Niemann (20) and Sungjae Im (21) will be making their Presidents Cup debuts, while Hadwin (32) will be making his second appearance at the event and Day (31) his fifth.

The International side will now feature six rookies at the event, which has left Captain Els excited by the injection of new blood.

Els has gone for form over experience in three of his wildcard picks. Sungjae Im has two top-five finishes this season already as well as a T11 at last week’s WGC-HSBC Champions, while Niemann recorded his first PGA Tour victory just a few weeks ago at the Greenbrier. Canadian Adam Hadwin has also begun his 2019/2020 fast, with two top-five finishes in just four events played.

The experienced Day, however, has been searching for his best form for months, with just one top-20 finish on the PGA Tour since May. The Australian will also be looking to improve his disappointing Presidents Cup record (5-11-4) in his native country.

Following his picks, Els spoke in reference to Day about the importance of having players on the side who can perform their best under pressure.

Tiger Woods is due to make his Presidents Cup picks on Thursday night.
