Young teams of Russia and Serbia were playing at the excellent level, experienced team of Italy got back into the game and sensationally USA and Poland remain without victory.
After the first weekend of World League Netherlands is leading the pool A, favorized Brazil is ranked as second, followed by Bulgaria and Korea. Brazil in front of their home audience claimed twice victory but Bulgaria showed its high performance and will to fight in the second game which ended up in the tie-break. Netherlands didn’t have any problems to beat Korea and won twice in straight sets.
World league 2010 complete results and ranking
Italy remains unbeaten in pool B, but the leader of the pool is Serbia due to tie-break between Italy and France. It was a wonderful weekend for Alessandro Fei who was spiking very well against “les bleus” and marked his come back to the national team. Serbia proved that even without Ivan Miljkovic and Nikola Grbic is able to play at the high level and is one of the favorites to win the whole World League competition. The rising star of Serbian volleyball, Sasa Starovic, was one of the most effective players during the first weekend of World League. Vice-champions of Europe, France, are playing with very young and experimental team and didn’t succeed against experienced Italy.
Reigning Olympic champions, USA lost twice against young team of Russia and sensationally after the first weekend of World League competition, are ranked as the last team in the pool C. Also rivalry between Finland and Egypt was exciting. Guys of coach Mauro Berutto surprisingly lost the first game against Egyptians 2:3 but got back the concentration in the second game, won 3:1
Pool D brought one of the biggest surprises of the weekend. Germany, a team which came back to the World League competition after the seven years of absence, outclassed Poland, the champion of Europe and the favorite of the pool. Team of Raul Lozano, the previous coach of the national team of Poland, didn’t have any problems to read the play of its competitors and was led to the victory by an amazing György Grozer. Germany is leading the pool D, followed by Cuba and Argentina.
First weekend of World League proved that nowadays every team can beat every team and there are no 100% favorites.
