MIAMI, FL — They text as they drive along Interstate 95 at 80 mph while making right turns from the left lane. They are the same people who see your turn signal as an invitation to speed up and their car horns as stress relief. They are terrible Florida drivers and we all know who they are. But it’s not entirely their fault, according to a new study.

The Sunshine State ranked 13th on Bankrate.com’s Worst States for Drivers, earning its place among the worst of the worst U.S. states. Florida’s ranking stems from a combination of high driving costs, fair driving quality and only moderately safe driving conditions.

“Most of us are still getting behind the wheel every day, but what driving costs in both time and money varies widely depending on where we live,” explained Adrian Garcia, data analyst for Bankrate.com in releasing the results of the study on Wednesday. “In areas where commute times are long and car ownership costs are high, it may make more sense to skip the luxury of your own vehicle and opt for public transportation, a carpool or a bike ride to work.”

California, Hawaii, Connecticut, New Jersey and Washington ranked as the very worst states for drivers in the U.S., according to Bankrate. North Dakota, Iowa, Ohio, Minnesota and Nebraska were the best states.

The study was compiled using seven measures related to cost, safety and driving quality.

“We used the most recently available data for all 50 states from government sources, research organizations and industry groups,” Bankrate said. “For our analysis, we gave cost a 45 percent weighing, driving quality a 35 percent weighting and safety a 20 percent weighting.”
