Speaking to L’Équipe, Arsenal right-back Mathieu Debuchy explained his frustration about his situation at the London club.

On being on the bench…

“It is difficult. Even though I did not play a lot last season, in my head, I was coming back as a starter in pre-season. It was a surprise and a disappointment (to find out otherwise).”

On if he had thought about leaving Arsenal…

“Let’s just say it crossed my mind. I want to be at Arsenal and to take my place back. He (Wenger) told me that nothing was set in stone and that there are a lot of matches to be played this season. He knows that I am worried because, at the end of the season, there is an important occasion (EURO 2016). You have to start for your club in order to start for your national team. He (Deschamps) was clear about that. In order to perform well, you need playing time. And, in the long term, if this situation continues, things will become delicate.”

On his situation with France…

“I have already proved what I am capable of with France. Admittedly, the last match I played was a month ago (9th August) so, honestly, I am not coming here in the best conditions. But I will give everything to show that I am still here and that I should be counted on.”
