The No. 18 Minnesota State wrestling team (10-3, 6-2 NSIC) will enter postseason competition on Saturday, Feb. 29 with a trip to the 2020 NCAA Division II Super Region 5 championships at the Sioux Falls Arena in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Super Region 5 is made up of all nine Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference teams plus the Rangers of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. The tournament serves as a qualifier for the upcoming 2020 NCAA Division II wrestling championships, with the top three individuals in each weight class at the regional event earning a berth to the NCAA Division II Championships held in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Mar. 13-14 at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.
In 2019, the Mavericks qualified three individuals to the NCAA Division II National Championships. Louie Sanders (141 lbs.) and Kyle Rathman (149 lbs.) earned trips to the national meet with second-place finishes in the regionals. Logan Saltou (165 lbs.) punched his ticket to the national championships with a third-place finish. Rathman went on to earn All-America honors after posting a seventh-place finish in the 2019 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships.
In the latest NWCA DII Coaches Association individual rankings, MSU has four wrestlers ranked nationally. Sanders is ranked 11th at 141 lbs., and holds a 12-4 record. Rathman owns the No. 3 ranking at 149 lbs., with a 14-3 record. Senior Zach Johnston (16-7) is ranked 11th at 174 lbs., while senior Matthew Blome (13-5) enters the postseason ranked 10th at 197 lbs.
