Ligue 1 side OGC Nice have this evening announced their purchase by British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s company INEOS, in a deal reported to be worth between €100m and €120m that see the previous group of Chinese-American owners, headed up by Chien Lee, depart.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe had the following to say on the deal:
“We are profoundly delighted to conclude the acquisition of OGC Nice. The road has been long to arrive at this point, but we were determined to finalise the club’s purchase. We analysed a number of clubs, in line with our business vision at INEOS – in terms of value and potential – and OGC Nice corresponds with those criteria. With a reasonable and measured investment, we want to make OGC Nice a club that is regularly capable of participating in European competitions. And is most of all capable of performing.”
“OGC Nice have a rich history and have held their traditions for a long time, with passionate supporters who will play an important role in our adventure. The Allianz Riviera is a superb stadium and has a new training centre, which will no doubt contribute to the success of the team, is just as impressive. It is difficult to find a better place to be than the Mediterranean region, and over the last 20 years, we have become rooted in this sublime region.”
“We have made some mistakes with Lausanne (Swiss 2nd division side also owned by INEOS), but we learn quickly, these were rectified and we are already seeing the results. The clubs need to perform well, whether that is on or off the pitch, and it will not be different for OGC Nice because we want to strengthen the club in every aspect in the coming years.”
“Patience will also be important, and the work that we do here will build on solid foundations. We have put together a plan and we will follow it. I am categorical: we are not going to spend our money pointlessly.”
