Last night Spanish defender Álvaro González (32) said his goodbyes to Marseille, as the player terminates his contract with the club that was meant to run until 2024. The former vice-captain of OM took to social media to say farewell to the club:

“Today I say goodbye to what has been my home for all these years. A club and supporters that made me enjoy football and live every minute with the passion that this sport deserves.”

Marseille had made an agreement with the player that he had to find a new club by 31st July – yet they did not receive a firm offer for the 32-year-old as expected. Potential suitors in Spain and elsewhere have preferred to wait out Gonzalez’s contract situation in order to avoid the payment of a transfer fee.

The former vice-captain of OM, who has played 75 matches in total for the Olympians at both centre-back and right-back joined the club in July 2020 from La Liga side Villarreal, after having had a loan spell in Ligue 1 made permanent.

Last season the 32-year-old only made 11 appearances for Marseille, mostly in Ligue 1, but with two appearances in the Europa League and one solitary appearance in the Europa Conference League.
