TWIN CITIES, MN — A West St. Paul man survived a heart attack before witnessing the birth of his son days later, all thanks to his wife’s heroic actions. Ashley Goette was nearly 40 weeks pregnant on Oct. 16 when she woke up to find her husband struggling to breathe.

Realizing something was seriously wrong, Ashley called 911 and started giving him CPR.

Andrew had gone without oxygen for a while by the time paramedics arrived. The 28-year-old was experiencing cardiac arrest.

Emergency crews rushed Andrew to the hospital, where doctors induced him into a coma to reduce the chance of brain damage.

The prognosis was dire, as signs indicated a catastrophic brain injury.

“I didn’t want to have to think for one second about having to do any of this without him,” Ashley told KMSP.

“I kept telling him the whole time he was asleep, or in his coma, that I was not going to have this baby until he woke up.”

Andrew miraculously woke up the next day. Staff moved him to the ICU to be by his wife, who was preparing to give birth.

On Friday, the family experience a second miracle. “Lennon Andrew Goette” was born. Andrew wasn’t able to be with his wife during delivery, but he watched it all via FaceTime, just rooms away in the same hospital.

“I was just so excited to be able to see him be born,” Andrew told KSTP. Doctors say Ashley’s quick actions saved her husband’s life.

“I don’t think Andrew would be here today if it wasn’t for the actions of Ashley,” Dr. Alex Teeters told the news station.

The GoFundMe page established for the family describes the dramatic incident as “an uplifting story about three awesome people surrounded by love.”

“Ashley, Andrew, and Lenny are eternally grateful for the love and support so many people have given!” the page adds.

“They are especially grateful to the First Responders and all of the amazing people at United hospital, without them this story could have ended very differently!”
