She may be embracing her gray hair, but still relies on her go-to colorist of 15 years, Lorri Goddard, to keep her blonde strands golden yellow.

“She’s meticulous about the balayage process and puts oil on the roots and tips so they don’t break,” she explains. “But it takes three hours to have my highlights done, no joke. I go every seven or eight weeks. I’m starting to get gray around the edges of my hairline. Lorri doesn’t like to call them grays, though. She says they’re ‘hyper-blondes.’”

Last month, she opened up to PEOPLE about her other must-have beauty items. Stern applies skin care, does a little facial massage, then uses this [facial sculpting] tool,” Witherspoon said. “My face doesn’t wake up until we do that.”

While Withespoon’s an expert in the skincare department, she turns to her 19-year-old daughter, Ava Phillippe, to give her makeup tips.

“I learn a lot from my daughter [about makeup],” the actress told PEOPLE, revealing that Phillippe honed her skills by watching YouTube tutorials. “Her understanding of how to apply it is

Her daughter’s application techniques are especially fantastic when it comes to eyeshadow and highlighter, which Witherspoon admitted she struggles with herself.

“If I have to do my makeup for a dinner or something, I’ll be like, ‘Ava, can you fix my eyeshadow? I can’t remember what goes in the crease,’ because she has this intense knowledge about how to shade. It’s crazy,” the star said.

“She [also] taught me how to put highlighter on my brow bones and the top of my cheekbones. I really liked the way it looked, so now it’s just become part of my makeup routine.”
