Shawn Spears recently spoke to Chris Van Vliet on a number of pro wrestling topics. One of those topics was the fact that WWE granted his release in February, which opened the door for him appear at Double or Nothing on May 25.

Spears talked about why he feels WWE said yes when he asked for his release, yet other talents, like Luke Harper and The Revival, have been told no.

“Maybe it’s a mutual respect that I had built up with them–I was with them for 8 1/2 years total, including my first time around. And I did things right. I never got in any trouble, I was professional and carried myself well and always did what I was asked to do. The other thing is that statement, that I put out later that evening on February 19, It kind of handcuffed them a little bit. If they would’ve kept me, that might have made a lot of people unhappy. If they would have kept me and utilized me in the wrong way or had me get killed on TV every week again, that probably would’ve made people upset. The third possible reason is maybe they didn’t see anything in me and they go you know what, we don’t see any is time to go, go ahead.”

Spears then said that he hopes it was the latter, because that fuels a little more fire for him. Longtime WWE fans know that Spears’ work as Tye Dillinger in WWE brought him a certain amount of fame in the company, but that his booking ultimately fell short.

Shawn talked about the support he received from his wife, current WWE Women’s Tag Team champion Peyton Royce. Royce made it clear that Spears’ habit of “bringing work home,” wasn’t working for her anymore.

“She said look, I need you happy. I don’t care how that is, I don’t care where that is. I just know that going forward, for the rest of our lives, for our future children and for our household now, I need you happy. So whatever it is you need to do to make yourself happy, I am with you 100%.”

Spears waited out the 90 days after his contract ended, which happened the day before Double or Nothing. Shawn has since been announced as the newest member of AEW’s roster.
