SMSU Defeats No. 23 Minot State In Thrilling Battle
MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (4-6, 3-4 NSIC) rallied against No. 23 Minot State (4-7, 0-5 NSIC) to earn a 22-15 victory on Friday night in the R/A Facility.
The dual started at 149 and opened with three bout victories for Minot State before Hayden Voxland (174) started the winning streak for the Mustangs with a decision victory over Joey Lopez. Cole Hennen (184) then followed behind with a victory by major decision (12-0) over Noe Garcia.
The momentum change came at 197 when Jackson Ryan took to the mat for no more than a minute before earning a win by pin at 30 seconds over MISU’s Dustin Swisher. Ryan’s victory gave the Mustangs the first lead of the night at 13-9.
The Mustangs dropped the next two bouts at 285 and 125 to MISU’s two ranked wrestlers. No. 6 Dean Arevalo at 125 earned a 14-7 decision victory over Willie Meine and No. 8 Jordan Will earned a 3-2 decision victory over Neil Hanson to take back a 15-13 lead.
133-pounder Jackson Stauffacher put the Mustangs back in the win column with a win by fall at 3:36 over Oscar Nellis, and to finish it off, Justin Sampson claimed an 8-3 victory over Liam Hayden.
This is the second dual this season the Mustangs have defeated a ranked opponent. The Mustangs defeated then-ranked No. 17 Northern State on Jan. 10.
