We’re not sure how he did it, but by some miracle of pure human resilience, “The Rainmaker” Kazuchika Okada successfully defended the IWGP Heavyweight Championship against Kota Ibushi in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom 14, night one.
The two took each other to their absolute limits and beyond in a nearly 40-minute content inside the world famous Tokyo Dome. He may have channeled the spirit of his beloved Shinsuke Nakamura, emptied every move in his kit, and even utilized Kenny Omega’s V-Trigger in a moment of pure desperation, but nothing seemed capable of putting down New Japan’s golden goose.
Neither star is done. The “Double Gold Dash” continues on night two of Wrestle Kingdom as Okada puts up the heavyweight title yet again, this time against IWGP Intercontinental Champion Tetsuya Naito, who won back his title earlier in the evening. Ibushi will also face Jay White.
