Public impeachment hearings into Donald Trump this week are set to turn into a battle royale for ratings as America settles down in front of its televisions for a rerun of Watergate.

The Watergate hearings in 1973 were watched live, at least in part, by 71 per cent of the US population, a seminal shared moment in the country’s history .

In anticipation of another viewing and advertising bonanza the three major US networks – CBS, ABC, and NBC – all announced they will set aside scheduled programming.
