TAMPA, FL — They may not have known anything about the ’80s rock band Foreigner a few months ago. But now songs by the English-American band formed in 1976 are on the playlists of kids being treated at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Tampa.
That’s because young patients at the hospital are prominently featured in the band’s new video release of the hit 1984 song, “I Want to Know What Love Is.”
Released on Dec. 31, the video was filmed in Tampa in September. In it, lead singer Kelly Hansen strolls down 7th Avenue in Ybor City encountering all of those aggravating obstacles like a guy at the checkout counter in front of Hansen counting out small change for his purchase and an accidental bump from a stranger causing Hansen to drop his newly purchased cup of coffee from the Blind Tiger Cafe.
But those obstacles are nothing compared to those Hansen witnesses while observing children at Shriners playing basketball on an outdoor court. Inside the hospital, Hansen encounters children laughing and playing despite their leg braces and wheelchairs.
The video concludes with a group of children from the hospital joining Hansen on stage for a chorus of the popular song.
All proceeds from downloads of this recording as well as a new live version of Foreigner’s greatest hits will benefit the 22 nonprofit Shriners Hospitals, which care for children with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lips and palates. regardless of their family’s ability to pay.
