Over the past year Kim Jong-un has fired missiles, carried out a massive nuclear test and traded bellicose rhetoric with Donald Trump. Now, the dictator has used the Winter Olympics in South Korea to change tack dramatically and unleash a charm offensive on the world.
The culmination of his efforts was a rare invitation to Pyongyang for South Korea’s president, a significant olive branch that has provoked cautious optimism for warmer relations between the neighbours.
Mr Kim’s offer was "virtually accepted" by President Moon Jae-in, paving the way for a first inter-Korean summit in more than a decade.
Were the visit to go ahead, it would be only the third such meeting to take place.
