As we noted moments ago, WWE issued a statement announcing the company has dropped the Fabulous Moolah name from the upcoming Women’s Battle Royal match at WrestleMania 34.
The social media backlash to the announcement of the match memorializing the late Fabulous Moolah was instant, and despite the criticism continuing throughout the week, WWE waited until today to finally change the match name.

Aside from social media and fan backlash, there appears to be a bigger reason why WWE decided to make the match change, and the WWE Universe’s opinion on the situation might have had very little to do with WWE’s decision. According to PWInsider.com, sources informed the site that Snickers, one of WWE’s major corporate sponsors, contacted WWE about the issue.
Additionally, Wrestling Inc. received the following statement from Mars Wrigley Confectionery US, the parent company of Snickers and biggest sponsor of WrestleMania 34:
“We were recently made aware of the World Wrestling Entertainment Inc’s (WWE) decision to honor a former wrestler during the upcoming WrestleMania 34 event. As a principle-based business that has long championed creating inclusive environments that encourage and empower everyone to reach their full potential, this is unacceptable. We are engaging with the WWE to express our disappointment.”
We noted moments ago that Stephanie McMahon issued the following comment on Twitter, attributing the decision to change the match name to fans expressing their opinions:
Thank you @WWEUniverse for using your voice. What remains most important is that the “@WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal” will be a historic match and is part of @WWE’s unwavering commitment to our Women’s Division. #WomensEvolution #ChangeTheName
