The Cruiserweight Classic tournament introduced fans to several exciting wrestlers back in 2016. A good portion of the names were signed and brought on as part of the roster for Raw, and the cruiserweights now have their own show titled 205 Live. WWE has been planning to launch the cruiserweights as an entirely separate brand for a while now, and those plans will be moving forward. PWInsider reported today that live events specifically for 205 Live will begin in 2018. The news comes after Vince McMahon revealed in February that the company is hoping to create revenue sources for the brand through live events, merchandising, and licensing.
WWE is testing out the demand for the live events before proceeding with anything permanent or major. It was mentioned in the original report that the plan is to run the first live event for the brand between 1/18/18 and 1/20/18. The company will reportedly be hosting the first few shows in smaller venues (similar to the ones used for NXT) in the Northeast. The current plan for the touring schedule is to run 2-4 events for one weekend each month, but there are no events scheduled past February at the moment. It is also being said that the events are not set in stone yet, which could be the reason why WWE themselves has yet to officially announce the news just yet.
205 Live regularly receives low viewership numbers on the network, but WWE is working hard to make sure that the cruiserweight division experiment is successful. Just last week, WWE sent fans a survey asking why they were not watching 205 Live. Recent additions to the division, such as Enzo Amore, Kalisto, and Hideo Itami should hopefully help add some star power to the cruiserweight roster in time for the rumored live events. Hopefully, we should be hearing the news announcing the live events very soon. In the meantime, the cruiserweights can be seen on Raw each Monday night and on 205 Live on the WWE Network immediately after Smackdown goes off the air on Tuesdays.
