L’Équipe report this morning that Kylian Mbappé’s relationship with his teammates has been deteriorating, with several players unhappy about the status that the Frenchman has gained in the wake of his contract extension.

Notably, the fact that the World Cup winner was favourable to Neymar leaving the club pushed the Brazilian to perform better this season. Along with Lionel Messi’s return to top form, the South American pair have gained in prominence on the pitch and their role in the squad has seen them garner the support of captain Marquinhos and some of the Spanish speakers.

While most of Mbappé’s teammates were happy to see him stay on in May, they are now confused as to his current attitude and why he would turn his back on them. One source close to the club’s training ground explains that the forward would arrive one day smiling and joking around, and the next he would look at nobody and not say a word.

However, Mbappé has reportedly shown a closeness to the club’s upper management as well as its new director of communications, former Téléfoot journalist Julien Maynard, who he is close to. Within the dressing room, though, the Frenchman no longer has the support of Achraf Hakimi, nor that of the French players in Hugo Ekitike, Nordi Mukiele and Presnel Kimpembe. He does have the backing of Christophe Galtier, though.

Although the PSG players appear willing to put their confusion to one side when on the pitch – notably Neymar, who continues to pass to Mbappé even when the latter sometimes appear to ignore him, like in the second half against Juventus – it remains to be seen whether the situation can hold until the World Cup.
